About The Clarence Major Art Website
This site is focused on the artwork created by one of the most important writers and poets working in the U. S. today -- Clarence Major, author of more than 20 books of poetry and fiction.
Major is an accomplished artist, who works in many different media: watercolor, oils, acrylic, pen and ink, pencil. He is one of those rare artists accomplished and comfortable both with words and with the tools of the visual artist, and who uses both to tell his stories and express his emotions.
Major has been working as a visual artist from his childhood, and first exhibited in 1950; many of his works are in public and private collections around the world.
Now the art of Clarence Major will become even more widely known with the publication of a new book titled Clarence Major and His Art: Portraits of an African American Postmodernist. Now available from the University of North Carolina Press in November 2000, the book is edited by Bernard Bell, and includes essays by Jerome Klinkowitz, Linda Selzer, Lisa C. Raney, Stephen Soitos, Steve Hayward, Stuart Klawans, Joe Weixlman and others. This handsome new book includes some 20 full page full color reproductions of Major's paintings.
Clarence Major is offering many of his artworks -- some of them featured in his new book and the exhibits associated with it -- for sale to those who want to own his unique and exciting creations. The art work for sale can be viewed at
